Changing the Course of Study or Place of Study
A change in the degree course or the place of study – if it is at all possible (e.g. due to restrictions on admission in the requested subject, taking into account the previous course achievements) – should be well planned, as possibly not all the achievements acquired during your course of study (examinations, certificates, placements) can be recognised at the new institution of higher education.
N.B. We urgently recommend getting advice on general studying and on the subject from the head of the new department. This is obligatory from the third semester onwards if you want to change your field of study. When seeking admission to the new department, written proof of consultation is required.
In addition, you have to apply in good time for admission to the corresponding subject-related semester. The relevant institution of further education will inform you on the deadlines.
If you attend a course of study with restrictions on admission (in particular if you have got your place of study through the Stiftung für Hochschulzulassung (successor of the ZVS)) then a change in the place of study is not automatically possible. To exchange your place of study you can look online for a suitable exchange partner and also you can find further information and tips regarding the change offered on the platform of the "Association for Student Matters" (Verein für studentische Belange).
The exchange of the place of study is only possible with the agreement of the institution of higher education.
Note: A change in the degree course is possible up to the fourth semester if there is an “important reason”. An irrefutable reason also has to be taken into account at a later date. The Student Union will inform you what are important or irrefutable reasons. Further information on the consequences when changing the course or place of study can be obtained from the relevant Student Union (Grants Office).
Foreign students have to take special regulations into account when changing the degree course. You can obtain further information in Section "Changes in the case of foreign Students".
Other Duties of Notification
The students are obliged to notify the institution of higher education of various changes:
- Change in name, address and nationality
- Taking up any type of service, employment or apprenticeship which is carried out during the course of study and which interferes with the course
- Loss of the Student ID Card
